“The Pennyless Players do it on stage”

OUR MISSION

Bringing English-Language Theatre
to the Graz Community

The Pennyless Players are a non-profit, non-professional, English-language theatre group. Originally founded in 2007 by students to bring practical theatre experience to the English and American Studies Department of the University of Graz.

The group rapidly expanded both its membership (currently about 30-40 active members) and its audience to the broader Graz community. We are an open community that welcomes all those with enthusiasm for theatre regardless of age, gender identity, race, religion, national origin, or talent.

What we do

As our irreverent slogan (given cheeky permanence on the chair we donated to the Alumni Lecture Hall) puts it, “The Pennyless Players Do It On Stage”. More seriously, what we do is provide a platform for people’s creativity and a safe and friendly space to try out everything theatre-related.

The Pennyless Players currently practice theatre in three ways: we have a long tradition of producing at least one fully-staged performance per year; we do improv theatre, in the form of open workshops and performances of our regular improv group; and we explore strange new worlds in regular ‘script-teases’.
Occasionally, we also perform smaller works in academic contexts, community outreach or education events.

Hot off the press!

Casting call: Circle Mirror Transformation

The time has come to announce our next feature-length play: Circle Mirror Transformation by Annie Baker. The Pennyless Players will return to Kristallwerk in May 2026 to bring the beauty of  human connection, empathy and self discovery to the stage through theater.  But before we can perform it, we need a cast! This is YOUR…

Tinted Trails – a Sprachenfest performance

The Pennyless Players present texts from Tinted Trails, an anthology published by the Graz-based literary journal Tint. Tint Journal publishes authors who write creative texts in English as their non-native language. The cast interprets selected texts in the style of a dramatic reading, blurring the lines between reading and acting. Using texts by writers from…
