About the play

Swordsman, philosopher, and poet Cyrano de Bergerac is all these things, but none of them makes him happy. What he desires above all is the love of the beautiful Roxane. However, he has never expressed his love for her, as his large nose undermines his self-confidence. Cyrano is shocked to discover that the love of his life has fallen for the handsome but shallow soldier Christian de Neuvillette. Christian feels unable to seduce her with his words and enlists Cyrano’s help to do so. Cyrano, convinced that he doesn’t stand a chance against the inarticulate but handsome young suitor, decides to lend a hand and write Christian’s love letters in his stead. The eloquent poet’s carefully chosen words become Christian’s passionate declarations of love – Roxanne, who is oblivious of what has been going on behind her back, falls madly in love with the author who she feels knows her soul.

Cyrano de Bergerac explores relatable and universal themes: struggles with self-image, unrequited love, the power of language and art, and the value of beauty and the mind (all that while still being incredibly funny!). It takes a look at what it means to love someone else when you don’t even love yourself and how your actions can have consequences for everyone around you. This adaptation of the French classic by British playwright Glyn Maxwell modernises the language and makes the play more approachable, while still preserving its poetic beauty.
