About the play

What do we work for?
A career. A big house with a front porch. A nice car. The latest TV set.
A happy family. A better life for our children. A legacy to pass on.
Success. Respect. Recognition. Joy. Contentment. Purpose.

All his life, Willy Loman has worked hard to achieve those dreams. Now, after decades as a travelling salesman, he is exhausted to the brink of collapse. Returning home to his wife and adult children, Willy finds himself estranged from a changing world and his family. As past and present, reality and delusion, begin to overlap in Willy’s mind, the Lomans are forced to confront the contradictions and the (self-)deception at the core of their lives. Now each member of this family needs to find a way of helping a man who has never been able to ask for help, while struggling to escape from the expectations he has passed on to them.

Arthur Miller tackles questions of work ethics, family, purpose, and ageing in the way he excels at: By examining society and ideology through their impact on the individual. This makes Death of a Salesman a touching, empathetic character study, as relevant today as when it was first brought to the stage.
